BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The baseball
Bearcats suffered another setback, dropping a mid-week doubleheader to
Missouri Southern by the scores of 9-5, and 22-8.
SBU centerfielder Jason Asher had arguably his best game since his return from injury last month in the opener. Asher went 3-for-4 at the plate, coming just a home run away from the cycle. He also got the Bearcat offense on the board early, after tripling in the first inning, then coming across the plate on Kyle Wise's base hit.
The 'Cats trailed early in the first game, after giving up five runs in the first inning, but had rallys in the fourth and seventh innings. Kyle Tormanen's home run in the fourth inning narrowed the margin to 7-3. After two more runs for the Lions in the top of the seventh, A.J. Roller's bases-loaded single in the seventh inning brought in a pair of RBI. The MSSU lead was cut to 4 again, but the late SBU charge would fall short.
In the second game, Missouri Southern jumped out to a big lead early, putting 7 runs in the first inning, building a deficit SBU would try to climb out of the rest of the game. The Bearcats biggest offensive output would come in the fifth inning. Wise came through again with a two-RBI single with the bases loaded. Two batters later, first baseman Justin Crumpley would knock in two runs of his own with another single. Tormanen would tack on one more with a sacrifice fly, making the score 20-5.
SBU hosts Wayne State (Neb.) this weekend in what is the Bearcats next to last homestand of the season. The four-game series starts Friday, April 10th, at 1:00 PM and Saturday's action begins at noon. Both days are doubleheaders with 2 seven-inning contests.
