BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The SBU softball Bearcats hosted Missouri Southern in a doubleheader, losing both games, 10-3, and 5-2.
SBU senior shortstop Taressa Gomez started out strong at the plate, going 2-for-4 in the first game, including a three-run home run in the fifth inning that cut the Southern lead to 6-3. The Lions put up four insurance runs in the seventh inning, however, to take the first game.
The 'Cats got out to an early 1-0 lead in the second game, with Krysta Baderdeen hitting her team-leading fifth home run of the season. The Lions brought home three runs in the third inning, helped out by a pair of SBU errors, then tacked on two more in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. Baderdeen scored the second run for the Bearcats in the seventh. After a single, Baderdeen went from first to third on a passed ball, then scored on Nina Amaro Garcia's sacrifice hit to shortstop. Garcia also pitched three and two-thirds innings in relief, only giving up three hits while striking out four.
The two losses drop SBU to 16-22 on the season, and 1-3 in the MIAA, while the Lions move to 3-1 in the conference and 13-22 overall.
The Bearcats will host Pittsburg State, tomorrow (Saturday) April 4th. First pitch is at 2:00 p.m. as the 'Cats will honor three seniors: Gomez, Rachel Shaw and Stephanie Rodriguez.
