PINEHURST, N.C. -- For the fourth time in the last two weeks, Matt Rogers has earned All-American honors. This time, it was Basketball Times which named him to their 2009 Division II All-American first team.
The Bearcats' 6-11 center, a junior from Doniphan, Mo., averaged 18.3 ppg. and 8.7 rpg. with a Division II-leading 123 blocked shots. He was named Daktronics South Central Region Player of the Year, unanimous MIAA MVP, first team All-MIAA and MIAA Defensive Player of the Year. Last week, he was named second team Daktronics All-American. He was also named to State Farm Coaches D-II All-American squad, as well as the NABC All-District first team. Earlier this week, he was named to the Division II Bulletin All-American first team.
Rogers shot 51.2 percent from the floor (169 of 33) and was 160 of 211 from the line (75.8 pct.). He was also one of the Bearcats' best outside shooters, connecting on 50 of 123 (40.7 pct.) from long range.
SBU finished 26-5 and won their third MIAA regular season crown in the last four years. They advanced to the South Central regional final, which was the second-best NCAA tournament finish in school history. They also extended their home court winning streak to 30 games, one of the best active streaks in Division II.
Joining Rogers on the Basketball Times All-American first team were Player of the Year Josh Bostic of national champion Findlay, Chris Commons of USC-Aiken, Anthony Hillard of Elizabeth City State and Jonathan Schmidt of C.W. Post. Ron Niekamp of Findlay and Tim Cluess of C.W. Post, the coaches for the squads ranked number one and two for the last part of this season, shared Coach of the Year honors.
