BEAVERTON, Ore. -- SBU center Matt Rogers picked up his third All-American honor, after being named to the Division II Bulletin 2009 All-American first team. The awards were announced in the special postseason review issue by DIIB editor Gary Rubin.
The Bearcats' 6-11 center, a junior from Doniphan, Mo., averaged 18.3 ppg. and 8.7 rpg. with a Division II-leading 123 blocked shots. He was named Daktronics South Central Region Player of the Year, unanimous MIAA MVP, first team All-MIAA and MIAA Defensive Player of the Year. Last week, he was named second team Daktronics All-American. He was also named to State Farm Coaches D-II All-American squad, as well as the NABC All-District first team.
Rogers shot 51.2 percent from the floor (169 of 33) and was 160 of 211 from the line (75.8 pct.). He was also one of the Bearcats' best outside shooters, connecting on 50 of 123 (40.7 pct.) from long range.
SBU finished 26-5 and won their third MIAA regular season crown in the last four years. They advanced to the South Central regional final, which was the second-best NCAA tournament finish in school history. They also extended their home court winning streak to 30 games, one of the best active streaks in Division II.
Joining Rogers on the DIIB All-American first team were Findlay's Josh Bostic (who was also named Player of the Year), USC-Aiken's Chris Commons, Cal-Poly Pomona's Larry Gordon and Northern State's Kevin Rarzsch.
