HAYS, Kan. -- Let's play three. With bad weather looming, the SBU
Bearcats and Fort Hays State Tigers played a rare tripleheader on
Thursday. Unfortunately for the Bearcats, the Tigers came out on top in
all three contests. The hosts won game one 4-2 and game two 13-1,
before taking the nightcap 6-4. Games one and two were seven inning
games with game three being a nine-inning battle.
The Bearcats
fell behind 2-0 in game one, before getting single runs in the fourth
and fifth innings. Jason Asher homered to lead off the fourth and
singled in Bo Helsel in the fifth. Asher finished 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.
Starter Greg Seay threw six innings and allowed three earned runs on
six hits, while striking out eight.
The Tigers pounded SBU
senior pitcher Ray Kelly in game two with three runs in both the second
and third innings. FHSU also scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth
and four more in the sixth. Alex Harvey drove in five for the Tigers.
The
Tigers got three runs in the third inning in game three, and added one
in the fourth and two in the sixth. The Bearcats' big inning came in
the top of the eighth when they scored four times. Kyle Tormanen would
triple in two runs and later score on a wild pitch. Justin Barnhart
would double to score Kyle Wise. Tormanen was 3-for-5 on the day.
Starter Eric Wallace pitched eight innings, but gave up six earned runs
on seven hits.
The Bearcats drop to 7-19 on the season and 5-12
in the MIAA. The Tigers are 17-16 overall and 9-10 in the MIAA. The
teams will attempt to complete the four-game series tomorrow (Friday)
beginning at 1:00 p.m., weather permitting. If rescheduled, the teams
will play Saturday also at 1:00 p.m.
