Bearcat softball splits with Missouri-St. Louis

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The SBU Bearcats earned a split in Tuesday's doubleheader with Missouri-St. Louis. UMSL's Allyson DeFosset threw a career-high 14 strikeouts in the first game, shutting out the Bearcats 3-0 before the 'Cat bats came alive in game two, routing the Tritons 10-0 in five innings.

McKenzie Mortimer had a double and single for SBU in the opener, as the Bearcats were held to four hits. Britney Wood got the start and threw three innings but picked up the loss after allowing three runs in the third. Nina Amaro Garcia tossed three scoreless innings in relief.

Taressa Gomez started game two with a bang, as she homered to leadoff the game. Krysta Baderdeen and Katrina Munoz also had run-scoring hits in the first inning.The Bearcats got single tallies in the second and third before exploding for five in the fifth inning.

Stephanie Luciani singled to score Baderdeen and later, Gomez would double to bring home two more. Garcia would then drive in two with a single.

Gomez was 3-for-4 in the closer, with four RBI and two runs scored. Baderdeen was 3-for-3 while Garcia drove in two runs. Josie Rose improved to 7-5, going five innings while striking out six batters and allowing two hits.

The Bearcats are now 9-15 overall while the Tritons are 13-12. SBU will travel to Pensacola, Florida, for the West Florida Spring Fling March 20-24. The Bearcats take on Central Methodist on March 20 at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
