KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The SBU baseball Bearcats split a pair of MIAA games against the Truman State Bulldogs, dropping game one 7-6 before winning the nightcap 9-3 behind a complete game from Ray Kelly.
After trailing 4-0 and getting no-hit into the fifth inning by TSU's Kyle Veazey, the Bearcats (7-10, 5-3 MIAA) tallied four runs in the sixth inning. The big hits came on a two-run single from Justin Crumpley and a two-run double from Brandon Shepherd. Truman (2-19, 1-9 MIAA) would retake the lead with a run in the bottom half, setting up a wild seventh inning.
SBU would go up 6-5 on a two-run homer from outfielder Kyle Wise. Bearcat reliever Kyle Guemmer, on to close the game, struggled against Bulldogs and was hurt by an error during the TSU rally. After striking out the leadoff hitter, Guemmer allowed a double and single and the error, on which Truman scored the tying run. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Kevin Zukaitis of Truman singled home the winner.
The bats and pitching came alive for the 'Cats in the second game. Senior starter Ray Kelly (2-2) threw a nine-inning complete game, allowing two earned runs while striking out three and walking none. Left fielder Bo Helsel had three hits including a triple and scored three runs. Wise was 2-for-4 and drove in three. Crumpley also had three hits for SBU.
The 'Cats scored a single run in the first and third innings, before getting three in the fourth and two runs in both the seventh and ninth. They pounded out 13 hits.
The Bearcats and the Bulldogs wrap up the four-game set on Saturday with two more contests starting at noon.
