BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The baseball Bearcats split a double header with the Pittsburg State Gorillas, losing 8-4 in the opener before winning 11-10 in game two.
Jason Asher and Brandon Shepherd both had solid games at the plate in the opener, both going 2-for-3. Asher led off the first inning with a double, and later came around to score to give SBU an early 1-0 lead. First baseman Justin Crumpley and right fielder Brendon Cox each hit home runs in the first game, but the offense wasn't enough to hold off the Gorillas, who scored four runs in the fourth inning, followed by three more in the sixth.
The offense came alive in the second game for the 'Cats, especially for left fielder Kyle Wise. Wise went 3-for-4, including two doubles, two RBI, two runs, and a stolen base. SBU was down 8-7 heading into the seventh inning, but the Bearcats put up four runs, including a two-run home run by C.J. Samuels that proved to be the difference. The Gorillas made a run in the ninth inning, closing the lead to one run, but Kyle Guemmer came on to collect his second save of the season.
The split puts SBU at 5-8 on the season, and 3-1 in MIAA play. Saturday, March 7th's doubleheader against Pitt State, originally scheduled for a noon start, has been moved up to 11:00 a.m., due to the risk of rain.
