WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The SBU men's indoor track and field team took fourth place while the Bearcat women took eighth at the 2009 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships held this weekend at the University of Central Missouri.

In the men's team standings, SBU earned 66 points for fourth place, behind Central Missouri (139.33), Emporia State (126) and Pittsburg State (85).  The SBU women scored 26 points to finish in eighth place.

“I was impressed with our team,” said head coach Corey McElhaney. “Everybody competed well. Jeff Weseloh and Nathaniel Rogers battled back and forth in the 600 yard run. Michael Pierce and Shawn Etzenhouser had good performances. Sarah Bowling came out and surprised the conference with her jumps. Courtney Ayers did all she could to help our team.”

Michael Pierce won the 3000 meters (8:32.24), and was a member of the winning distance medley relay team (10:24.28).  Shawn Etzenhouser won the 800 meters (1:53.41, an NCAA provisional time), took fifth in the 3000 meters (8:37.44) and was also part of the winning DMR team. Will Hansen
took third in the mile run (4:16.13).

In the 600 yard run, SBU went 1-2 with Jeff Weseloh (1:13.30) earning 10 points and Nathaniel Rogers (1:13.64) grabbing eight points. Both runners were members of the  4x440 yard relay team which ran second (3:26.13) and Rogers also ran a leg on the DMR team. Frank Grant, Jr., took fifth in the 200 meter dash (22.72).

On the women’s side, Sarah Bowling earned 16 points with two second place finishes in the triple jump (11.93 m, just missing an automatic NCAA qualifying mark) and in the high jump (1.66 m, just missing a provisional mark). Bowling’s leap in the triple jump ranks as the third longest this season in Division II.

Courtney Ayers nabbed two fourth place finishes in the 5000 meter run (18:29.52) and in the 3000 meters (10:32.46). Jenny Blair placed fifth in the 400 meters (58.64).

Several Bearcat athletes will compete at the NCAA Nationals in Houston, Texas, on March 13-14. The exact names will be released once the final fields are set by the NCAA based on automatic and provisional marks.
