MARYVILLE, Mo.-- A last second three-pointer from Rachel Graves missed
the mark as the SBU Bearcats fell to the Northwest Missouri State
Bearcats 75-73.
Graves hit a three-pointer with 21 seconds left
to cut the NWMSU lead to 74-73. NWMSU’s Micaela Uriell hit one of two
free throws with 15 seconds remaining before Graves’ game-winning
attempt was off to the right.
“Northwest did a good job of
defending the last shot,” said head coach J.C. Carter after the
heartbreaker. “I’ve never seen anything like this, let alone to be a
part of it. They’re giving winning effort, but falling just short. We
have to keep going out, giving full effort and play hard against
Missouri Western on Saturday.”
Graves had a great all-around
effort and led SBU with 24 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals.
Senior Cortney Shewmaker had 17, Courtney Heady had 12 and Jasmine
Sanford added 10 for the purple Bearcats. Rickeya McElroy led Northwest
with 22 points. SBU would connect on 12 of 33 three-point attempts,
while Northwest would hit 10 of 22 from long distance. SBU
out-rebounded NWMSU 42-37.
SBU led at the half 30-29 and would
open up an eight-point margin with four minutes gone in the second
half. A layup by Uriell capped a 24-9 Northwest run and put the green
‘Cats up 59-52 with 7:49 remaining. SBU would charge back with a 17-8
run, keyed by treys from Mia Gilreath, Shewmaker and Heady. Northwest (9-17, 5-14 MIAA) would grab the lead for good on a jumper from McElroy with 90 seconds
remaining.
SBU (7-19, 4-15 MIAA) hosts Missouri Western on Saturday evening
beginning at 5:30 p.m. It will be Senior Night. The
Bearcats need to beat the Griffons and hope Missouri Southern defeats
Northwest Missouri State on Saturday afternoon. This would force a
three-way tie between SBU, MWSU and NWMSU at 5-15. SBU would own the
tiebreaker due their win over Emporia State since the three teams would
have gone 1-1 against each other.
