HAYS, Kan. -- The Fort Hays State Lady Tigers jumped out to an early lead and never trailed as they beat the SBU Bearcats 74-62 Wednesday night at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The Lady Tigers (10-14, 6-11 MIAA) raced out to a 7-0 start and would extend the lead to 20-7 at the 10:45 mark on a layup by Erica Biel. They would push the margin to 14 points with 3:43 left and would lead at halftime, 44-33.

SBU (7-17, 4-13 MIAA) would use outside shooting from Courtney Heady and Cortney Shewmaker to cut the deficit to 51-48 with four minutes gone in the second half. Fort Hays would extend the lead back to 11 points on several occasions. SBU would get to 63-58 on a layup by Rachel Graves with 7:44 left but that was as close as the ‘Cats would get.

Shewmaker led the Bearcats with 16 points, including 4-of-7 from long range. Heady hit five treys and finished with 15 points. Graves had 13 points and Jasmine Sanford recorded 10 rebounds for SBU. FHSU’s Biel recorded a double-double with 27 points and 17 rebounds.

“In the first half, our effort was decent,” said head coach J.C. Carter. “In the second half, we cut it to three, and assumed the possession was over. Then we’d give up second chance points which are pretty frustrating.”

“We moved the ball better and ran the offense good,” Carter continued. “We did better crashing the boards, though we were still out-rebounded by nine (46-37).”

The Bearcats will look break an eight-game losing streak when they return home on Saturday evening and host Nebraska-Omaha beginning at 5:30 p.m. SBU is still seeking one of the final spots in the MIAA Tournament. Currently the ‘Cats are tied for ninth, a game behind Missouri Western for the eighth and final tourney berth.
