BOLIVAR, Mo. --
The SBU softball Bearcats gained a split against neighboring Drury,
pounding the Panthers 13-2 in game one before falling 6-2 in the second
contest.
Nina Amaro Garcia was one of several stars in the first game, going 3-for-4 at the plate and also making several plays in left field. McKenzie Mortimer, Stephanie Luciani, Krysta Baderdeen and Meeca Chambers all drove in two runs each. Josie Rose went the distance for the win, her third of the season.
SBU (4-4) scored two runs in the first inning, before extending their margin to 7-0 with a five-run outburst in the third. Drury scored two times in the fourth, but the Bearcats would respond with six tallies in the bottom half of the fourth.
"We did a great job of
being aggressive in all areas -- with the bats, on the basepaths and in
the field," said coach Christy Capner. "NIna did a great job and Josie
threw a great game, holding them to two runs and two hits."
In the second game, Drury (3-5) scored twice in the first and added runs in the third and sixth, along with two more in the seventh inning. SBU could only get two across for the game, which included Baderdeen's second homer of the year, a solo shot in the fourth.
"We need to learn how to finish and stay aggressive," added Capner. This is the third straight game day that the Bearcats have won game one, only to fall short in the second contest.
SBU travels to Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas, for the Midwestern State Invitational beginning Thursday.
