AMES, Iowa -- An NCAA automatic qualifying time in the distance medley relay highlighted the SBU men's indoor track performance this weekend at the Iowa State Classic. The men’s DMR team finished second at the meet with a time of 9:50.35, trailing only Division I Minnesota in the meet.
The DMR team included Shawn Etzenhouser (1200 meters – split: 3:03), Nathaniel Rogers (400 meters – split: 48.9), Jeremy Glassmaker (800 meters – split: 1:54) and Michael Pierce (1600 meters – split: 4:03). Their time was a new school record and ranks as the second best time in Division II this season.
Pierce also finished 10th in the 5,000 meters and provisionally qualified for nationals with a time of 14 minutes, 27.35 seconds, breaking a 15-year old school record in the event. His time ranks eighth in Division II. For his performance this weekend, Pierce was named Monday as MIAA Men’s Track Athlete of the Week.
The meet also included a school record by Jeff Weseloh in the 400 meters (18th - 50.03). Nathaniel Rogers placed 14th (1:55.39) in the 800 meters.
“The guys ran amazing on Friday night,” said head coach Corey McElhaney. “It was very special for me to see these four (DMR) guys come together and run the way they did. We were hoping to improve on the national performance, but to automatically qualify was awesome. We really feel like we have a shot at winning nationals.”
The Bearcats return this weekend at the Nebraska Tuneup on Friday in Lincoln, followed by the Missouri Southern Invitational in Joplin on Saturday.
