INDIANAPOLIS -- Southwest Baptist University wide receiver Johnnie King earned the 2008 NCAA Division II statistical championship for receptions per game.

King, a junior from St. Louis, Mo., caught 89 passes in 10 games for an average of 8.9 per contest. He had 1120 yards receiving and nine touchdowns to lead the Bearcats, after transferring from Oklahoma Panhandle State.

This was the second straight year an SBU wide receiver earned the honor. King joins Nick Smart, who led the nation in 2007 with 13.0 catches per game after his all-division record-setting season of 143 catches.

"Johnnie came in as a transfer and did a phenomenal job for us," said SBU head coach Keith Allen. "We expect him to reach his full potential next season. We can't wait to see what he'll do in the 11 games in 2009."

The Bearcats' record-breaking 2008 season included notching the most wins (5) in a season since 2001 and setting a school record for most points in a season (434). The Bearcats continued their record-setting streak of 44 games without being shut out. SBU also set school records for most offensive yards in a season (5391), and most passing yards in a season (3570).
