WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The SBU Bearcats couldn't overcome a big second half run from Central Missouri and fell to the Jennies 90-81 Saturday afternoon.
SBU (7-11, 4-7 MIAA) led at the half 34-27 but was outscored 63-47 in the second frame by UCM. Included in that was a 17-2 run by the Jennies (14-4, 9-2 MIAA) that turned the game from a seven-point SBU lead to 50-42 UCM advantage with 12:19 left in the second half. UCM would push their lead to as much as 18 with 6:21 remaining. SBU would get as close as 82-76 with 50 seconds left on a layup by Jasmine Sanford.
Rachel Graves led the Bearcats with 17 points, followed by Cortney Shewmaker with 15 and Jasmine Sanford with 14 points. Courtney Creed had 8 boards to lead SBU. Central Missouri had six players in double figures led by Katy Davenport with 17 points.
“After a good first half, our defense was real lax the first five minutes of the second,” said head coach J.C. Carter. “We did a good job guarding and boxing out in the first half. We allowed them to penetrate and get to the foul line. It’s hard to beat a team when they go 24 of 25 from the foul line in the second half.”
The Jennies out-shot the Bearcats from the foul line for the game. UCM was 31 of 38 while SBU was 14 of 19. Central out-rebounded SBU 37-33. SBU made 11 of 23 from long range.
The Bearcats are off this Wednesday before heading to Joplin next Saturday night to take on Missouri Southern in a 5:30 p.m. start.
