ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Missouri Western shot 58% from the field and defeated the SBU Bearcat women, 84-66.
Missouri
Western picked up just their second win of the season. The Griffons
(2-14, 2-8 MIAA) led by as many as 21 points in the second half after
leading at the break 40-27. SBU’s only lead came at 9-8 with 14:39 left
in the first half.
“That was definitely not a 1-14 team,” said
coach J.C. Carter. “We knew looking at footage going in, that they were
gaining confidence. We just hoped that it wouldn’t come against us.
They shot the ball very well and beat us in transition. We had a tough
time getting to the basket and our shots weren’t falling. But they did
a good job and kept battling. We just dug ourselves too big of hole
again.”
Rachel Graves led SBU (7-10, 4-6 MIAA) with 13 points.
Three other players were in double figures with 11 each: Cortney
Shewmaker, Courtney Creed and Mia Gilreath. Graves also had 7 boards
to led SBU. Freshman Jessica Koch led the Griffons with 21 points, 9
assists and 7 rebounds. Koch was one of five Griffons in double figures.
The
Bearcats shot just 26% (9/35) from three-point range and 32% from the
field. MWSU was able to get the inside consistently, outscoring the
Bearcats 48-14 in the paint. The Griffons also blanked the ‘Cats in
fast break points 16-0.
SBU continues on road on Saturday in Warrensburg when they play the Central Missouri Jennies in a 1:30 p.m. start.
