JOPLIN, Mo. -- The SBU Bearcats competed Friday & Saturday in the Missouri Southern Fazolis/Baymont Inn Invitational, their first meet of the 2009 portion of their indoor track and field slate.
Among the highlights for the Bearcat women were second place finishes in the 200 meters (Jenny Blair 26.10), mile run (Camrie Nixon 5:40.13), 3000 meters (Courtney Ayers 10:56.13), and distance medley (Holly Hackney, Katie Dusenburg, Kassidy Porter and Nixon 13:17.53).
On the mens side, SBU picked up second place finishes in the 600 yard run (Nathaniel Rogers 1:15.05), 800 meters (Shawn Etzenhouser 1:55.86), and 4x400 meter relay (Jesse Kueker, Rogers, Etzenhouser, Jeff Weseloh 3:26.77).
"This was our first meet coming off the Christmas break. We only had a small percentage of athletes to come back and train," said head coach Corey McElhaney. "Its a long season ahead and we used this event to gauge where they were at and what they need to work on."
Blair also finished ninth in the 60 meter prelims. Jennifer Gillespie took sixth in the 200 meters. Gillespie was ninth in the 60 meter hurdle prelims. Blair and Gillespie were ninth and tenth in the 400 meters. Kassidy Porter ran sixth in the 600 yard run. Katie Ware had personal bests in the 60 and 200 meter races.
Joining Camrie Nixon with top ten finishes in the mile were Holly Hackney (3rd), Melanie McVay (4th) and Amber Hoard (10th). Erica Whitfield, Rebecca Brigance and Andrea Owensby went 10 through 12 in the 3000 meter run. Jennifer Golden broke the school record in the weight throw. SBU also had 4th and 10th place finishes in the 4x400 meter relay.
Frank Grant, Jr. (6th) and Robert Barrow (8th) both had personal bests in the 60 meter dash prelims, with Grant finishing fifth in the finals. Grant and Barrow also took fourth and sixth respectively in the 200 meters. Jeff Weseloh (3rd) had a personal best in the 600 yard run and Jesse Kueker also finished sixth in the race.
In the 800 meter run, Jeremy Glassmaker was third and Will Hansen took sixth. Vince Tichenor ran fourth in the mile, while Josiah Coen was eighth. David Schulties took ninth in the 5000 meter run. The distance medley teams took third and eighth in their race. Michael Morris had a personal best throw in the shot put.
Next up for Bearcat track and field will be the Iowa State University Open in Ames, Iowa on Friday and Saturday, January 23-24.
