OMAHA, Neb. -- The SBU Bearcat women fell 85-72 on the road at Nebraska-Omaha.
The
Bearcats (6-9, 3-5 MIAA) trailed by as much as 19 points, at 38-19 with
5:18 left in the first half. Cortney Shewmaker would score seven of the
next nine SBU points to key a 9-2 run to close the first half.
SBU
would cut into the UNO 12-point half early on buckets by Rachel Graves
and Courtney Creed before the Mavs would extend the lead again. SBU
would get the closest at 69-67 on a three by Courtney Heady at the 5:42
mark, but the Mavericks (7-6, 4-4 MIAA) would pull away down the
stretch.
Courtney Creed led SBU with 18 points. Courtney Heady
had 16 and Rachel Graves added 11 points. Jasmine Sanford had 6
rebounds and Cortney Shewmaker had 3 steals to lead the Bearcats. The
Mavs had four players in double figures, led by Amanda Brodsack with 22
points.
“They’re a good team. They’re very big inside - the
biggest lineup we’ve seen,” said SBU head coach J.C. Carter. “It’s the
same song, about the fifth or sixth verse. We just don’t come out
competing in the first half. We used up a lot of energy coming back and
we were battling foul trouble. We need to come out and compete better.
Courtney Heady stepped up and our veterans (Creed & Shewmaker) did
a good job, despite playing 36 hard minutes.”
Both teams shot
49% from the field. SBU made nine 3-pointers but the foul line told the
difference. The Mavericks were 26 of 34 from the line, compared to just
9 of 15 for the Bearcats.
The Bearcats return home for a Saturday 5:30 p.m. tipoff against Northwest Missouri State.
