BOLIVAR, Mo. --  The SBU Bearcats waited until their last possession of the second half to grab the lead, rallying to beat the Fort Hays State Lady Tigers 65-63. Cortney Shewmaker hit a runner in the lane with 6.9 seconds remaining to the give the 'Cats the victory.

Fort Hays led 63-54 with 5:17 remaining before SBU would start another second half comeback. Buckets by Jaime Garrett and Jasmine Sanford cut into the deficit. A three-pointer by Courtney Heady tied the score at 63 each with 53 seconds left. After a missed three-pointer by FHSU’s Naomi Bancroft, the Bearcats would hold for the last shot. Shewmaker drove to the hole on left of the lane, hit the game winner and was fouled. She missed the free throw but FHSU’s last second shot attempt was no good.

Rachel Graves led the ‘Cats with 20 points,  6 assists and 5 steals. Jasmine Sanford added 10 points for SBU. Three players had 8 points each for the Bearcats: Jaime Garrett, Cortney Shewmaker and Courtney Heady. Graves, Shewmaker and Mia Gilreath had 4 boards each to top the Bearcats. Erica Biel had 19 points and 16 rebounds to led Fort Hays State.

“We had an 11-0 run to end the game and relied on our defense,” said SBU head coach J.C. Carter. “Credit (Cortney) Shewmaker with her ability to get off the last shot. Rachel (Graves) was phenomenal. She made plays tonight when we needed her. She’s just a solid player. We got out-rebounded in the first half but picked it up in the second by getting more physical and boxing out.”

“Our players did a good job of finding their shooters,” Carter continued. “It’s a big win, but any win is big. Fort Hays is a talented team. Going to Omaha, we need to continue working on rebounding.”

SBU trailed at halftime 38-28. The Bearcats were out-rebounded 44-33.

The Bearcats improve to 6-8 overall and 3-4 in the MIAA while FHSU drops to 8-6 and 4-2 in the MIAA.

The Bearcats will be back in action on Wednesday night from Omaha, Neb., for a first-ever meeting with the Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.
