BILLINGS, Mont. -- The SBU Bearcat football team gathered 10 All-Independents Collegiate Athletic Association (ICAA) honors when postseason awards were announced. Bearcat QB Steve Gachette led the way, as he was named ICAA Offensive Player of the Year.
Also honored by the ICAA as First Team selections were Gachette, WR Johnnie King, DL Clint Carroz and LB Jarred Schumpert. Second Team selections were RB Jeff Finnell, WR Jonathan Alvarado, K Justin Finch, RS (return specialist) Sean Kelley, and DB Tyrin Holt.
Sophomore quarterback Steve Gachette was named Offensive Player of the Year. He completed 59.8% of his passes for 3371 yards (306.45 per game) and 27 touchdown passes. He also rushed for 658 yards (59.82 pg) and six touchdowns and led the ICAA in total offense with 4029 yards (366.27 pg).
The ICAA is comprised of NCAA Division II independents in all sports, and in football consists of Lake Erie College, Lambuth, North Greenville, Oklahoma Panhandle State, Southwest Baptist, UNC-Pembroke and Urbana. All seven schools were represented on the 2008 All-ICAA Football squad. The squad and award winners were selected by ICAA Director Mike Bond.
The Bearcats record-breaking 2008 season included notching the most wins (5) in a season since 2001 and setting a school record for most points in a season (434). The Bearcats continued their record-setting streak of 44 games without being shut out. SBU also set school records for most offensive yards in a season (5391), and most passing yards in a season (3570).
