TOPEKA, Kan. --  The SBU Bearcats fell on the road at Washburn, losing 81-62 to the #3 Lady Blues.

The Bearcats stayed close early in the first half, when SBU’s Jasmine Sanford hit a jumper to tie the game at 11 apiece at the 15:07 mark. Washburn would then go on a 24-8 run over the next ten minutes, which pushed the lead to 16 at 35-19. After the final media timeout of the first half, SBU would narrow the gap to eight points before the eventual halftime score of 40-29 in favor of the Lady Blues.

A three-pointer by WU’s Janice Bright early in the second half pushed the Lady Blues’ second half lead to 13 points before the ‘Cats would trim the lead. A 7-0 SBU run got the score to 47-41 with 15:04 left. But that was as close as SBU would get as the Lady Blues would push their second half margin to as much as 21 points.

“We came out a little flat. We control our effort. Our intensity waned at times, but picked up in the second half, when we made the little run. Washburn is a very good team, with good post presence and is solid defensively. They don’t get caught out of position.”

When asked about his team’s 20 turnovers, Carter said, “We have to take of the ball better. We were unsure of ourselves but we have to play with more confidence.”

MIAA leading scorer Courtney Creed had 14 points to lead the Bearcats. Jasmine Sanford was also in double figures with her SBU-high 13 points. Cortney Shewmaker had 8 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists for the Bearcats. Janice Bright had 24 points to lead the Lady Blues.

Washburn out-rebounded the Bearcats 36-25. The Bearcats hit only 5 of 17 from three point range while the Lady Blues were 8 of 25. The ‘Cats also handed out only 8 assists, well off their 16.4 per game season average.

SBU falls to 5-8 overall and 2-4 in the MIAA. Washburn improves to 13-1 and 6-1 in the conference. SBU returns home on Saturday when they host the Fort Hays State Lady Tigers in a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
