BOLIVAR, Mo. - The SBU Bearcat women picked their first MIAA win of the season, as they rallied to beat the Truman State Bulldogs 63-60.
Truman would lead by as much as 13 in the first half, before going to the break up 38-30. SBU would chip away before drawing even at 40 each at the 15:46 mark of the second half on a three-pointer by Courtney Heady. A three pointer by freshman Kayla Carson gave the Bearcats the lead at 45-44 with 11 minutes left in the second frame, their first lead since 3-2 in the opening minutes.
From there, neither team would have a lead of more than three points until the 2:37 mark, when freshman Mia Gilreath scored a layup and was fouled. Her free throw gave SBU a 59-55 lead. Truman’s Julie Guinn would later hit a three to cut the SBU lead to 61-60 with 51 seconds left, but Cortney Shewmaker responded with a layup that gave the Bearcats their final victory margin.
Courtney Creed led the SBU women with 17 points and 4 steals. Mia Gilreath also added 12 points for the Bearcats. Bearcat newcomer Jasmine Sanford also had 9 points and led SBU with 6 rebounds. Cortney Shewmaker had 8 points and 7 assists for the ‘Cats.
“We needed that,” said head coach J.C. Carter after the game. “We knew it would be a battle, as both teams were looking for their first conference win. I told the team at halftime that who played with the biggest heart was who was going to win. We didn’t get to some loose balls in the first half but we played more like a team in the second half. Cortney Shewmaker came up big down the stretch. Jasmine Sanford got some big rebounds. Freshman Kayla Carson hit a big three for us.”
The Bearcats were out-shot (46% to 36%) and out-rebounded (44 to 29) but still came away with the win. SBU was 10 of 29 from three-point range and forced 14 TSU turnovers. The Bearcats improve to 4-7 and 1-3 in the MIAA, while Truman falls to 3-9 and 0-5 in the MIAA.
SBU is back action this Saturday when it travels to Emporia, Kansas to take on the #9 Lady Hornets of Emporia State. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. at White Auditorium.
