Bolivar, Mo. - The SBU Bearcat women’s basketball team rallied after being down 19 points in the second half, but fell short in their comeback attempt, losing to Missouri Southern 77-69 Monday night at the Meyer Sports Center.
Courtney Creed led the Bearcats with 25 points, while Cortney Shewmaker had 10 points for SBU. The Bearcats connected on just four of 19 from three-point range.
Head coach J.C. Carter commented that he was proud of the effort and energy in the comeback attempt. “We know people are going to try to stop our three point attempts,” he said. “We need to be more disciplined to get better looks and take defenders off the dribble. We also need to do a better job on offensive rebounds.”
The Bearcats used a 21-5 run to trim a 55-36 lead to two points. They had several opportunities to take the lead at 60-58 before Southern pushed it back to a nine point lead at 67-58. The Bearcats would get to within four points in the final 20 seconds on a three-pointer by Creed but could not get any closer as Southern would hit their free throws down the stretch, going 21 of 22 for the game.
India Wood had a career-high 32 points for the Lions. She hit 5 of 9 from long range. Danielle DeVader added 12 points and 10 boards for Missouri Southern.
Missouri Southern led at the half 42-33. The Lions outrebounded the Bearcats 36 to 23. SBU forced 25 turnovers and committed just 13 as a team. SBU shot 46% from the field compared to 49% for the Lions.
SBU drops to 3-7 on season and 0-3 in the MIAA. Missouri Southern improves to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA. SBU is right back in action on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Truman State at 1:30 p.m.
