PITTSBURG, Kan. - The SBU women lost to Pittsburg State, 74-64, in a MIAA matchup on the road.
The Bearcats were led in scoring tonight by Rachel Graves (20 points) and Cortney Shewmaker (19 points).
The Bearcats fell behind early on some good three-point shooting by the Gorillas. SBU largest deficit came at the 8:11 mark of the 2nd half, when Pitt State made three consecutive treys to give the Gorillas a 29-13 lead. SBU cut the Pitt lead to 6 with 13:30 left in the game, but was unable to take the lead.
"Pitt State is a very good team, who can play inside and out," said SBU’s head coach, JC Carter. "They got hot from the three-point line early, and we couldn’t get out of the hole. Pitt is a very physical team, without question the most physical we’ve played this season. But I’m proud of the way we competed for 40 minutes tonight."
"Rachel [Graves] and Cortney [Shewmaker] really stepped it up offensively tonight. Both of them drove to the basket and got to the line six times each. Overall I’m optimistic about our team as we get a few days off before we come back with Central Methodist a week from tonight."
The Bearcats were perfect from the line tonight, hitting on all 14 attempts.
SBU falls to 2-6 on the season, with an 0-2 mark in the MIAA.
