SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The SBU women’s basketball team lost to St. Mary’s, 71-67, in the final game of the St. Mary’s classic.
The Bearcats were paced by Courtney Creed, who dropped in 23 points, 18 of which came in the second half.
The Bearcats were down by 9 with 7:15 to play, and rallied to pull within a point of St. Mary’s in less than two minutes. The game stayed close, but SBU was unable to pull ahead.
“Tonight was another ‘tale of two halves’ like last night,” said SBU’s head coach, JC Carter. “I thought we played with high energy and intensity, especially in the first half. And I thought we responded well when we got behind in the second half. Our defense was really good. It just came down to two or three unfortunate turnovers tonight, which we’ll address. I will say that it will be good to play at home next week.”
SBU’s Mia Gilreath scored 14 in the contest. Erica Smith had a career-high 13 rebounds.
SBU will play its first home game of the season on Tuesday, as they open up their MIAA schedule with Central Missouri.
