TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The SBU women’s basketball team won their first game of the season, 77-64, against Northeastern State (Okla.).
SBU put four players in double figures in the season-opening victory. Courtney Creed led the offensive attack with 19 points on 8-16 from the field. Rachel Graves and Mia Gilreath teamed up with 14 points each. Cortney Shewmaker added 13.
With 16:26 play in the contest, Northeastern’s Lindsey Sams hit a three to tie game at 43. But SBU’s Gilreath hit a trey 20 seconds later to give the Bearcats the lead they would not relinquish. In fact, this sparked a 12-point SBU run over the next 4 ½ minutes.
As a team, the Bearcats shot 47% from the field, 39% from long range, and 64% from the free throw line. Rebounds were a virtual wash, with Northeastern claiming a 32-31 advantage.
With the win, SBU stands at 1-0 on the season. They travel to Quincy a week from today.
