SBU Volleyball: Bearcats Defeat Western, 3-1 to pick up MIAA Win

BOLIVAR, Mo. - The SBU Bearcats defeated Missouri Western, 3-1, to earn their first MIAA volleyball victory of the season.

Western took the first set from the Bearcats, 18-25, as SBU hit only .105 during the first stanza. SBU took the second set, 25-13, as Ashley Jurgensmeyer had five kills in the session, on a long string of served by Kinsey Palmer.

SBU found themselves down in the key third set, 16-20, before going on a 9-2 rally for the win to put them up 2-1 in the match. The Bearcats took set #4, 25-16, for the final victory.

"I’m very proud of the way we came back after losing the first set," said SBU’s head coach, Kelly Richardson. "I liked the way we adjusted, showed confidence, and were aggressive. We set a good tone tonight, and we’re looking for that to carry over into tomorrow’s match with Northwest."

Jurgensmeyer finished the match with 15 kills, hitting a blistering .520.

The win evens SBU’s overall record, 8-8, and gives them a 1-3 record in the MIAA.

The Bearcats host Northwest Missouri tomorrow (September 27) at 1:00.
