BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The SBU Department of Athletics is proud to announce the inductees of the SBU Athletics Hall of Fame, Class of 2009.
The following SBU Athletics Hall of Fame inductees will be recognized on February 14, 2009, during the SBU Athletics Honors Night ceremony, which will also recognize SBU’s senior athletes.
Lester Baker, Football, 1985-87, 1989
Baker played football for SBU for four seasons, and was one of the team’s tri-captains in 1987 and 1989. He is SBU’s all-time leading rusher with 3,892 yards on 823 carries. Baker holds SBU records for points scored in a game (30), in a season (114), and in a career (270). He holds the SBU record for touchdowns scored in a game (5), in a season (19), and in a career (45). Baker also holds the SBU records for rushing attempts and rushing yards in a game (43, 238), in a season (286, 1391), and in a career (823, 3892). Baker was named to the Football Gazette All-American Second-Team in 1989. He was the MIAA Offensive Player of the year in 1989. He played for coach Garry Brandt from 1985-87 and later for Jim Hall in 1989.
Tim Elliott, Basketball, 1970-74
Elliott was a 6-2 guard who played basketball for the Bearcats for coach John Edwards for four seasons. Elliott ranks third on SBU’s all-time scoring list, and fourth on SBU’s all-time field goals made list. He scored 606 points during the 1972-73 season, which is the third highest single season point total in Bearcat history. That year, he attempted 540 field goals, the most ever by a player at SBU. On February 27, 1973, Elliott became the first SBU Bearcat to score 40 points in a game. Elliott’s 40 points against Arkansas Tech was later matched by Glenn Stanley in 1989. Elliott did emerge from the contest with 20 successful field goals, which is a single-game record he holds by himself.
Glenda Psalmonds, Softball, 1980-81
Psalmonds played softball for two seasons at SBU. In 1980, she earned All-State honors and pitched five games at regionals, which were all won by SBU, and had a 0.21 ERA during post-season play. She recorded two 16-strikeout performances during the 1980 season. In 1981, she was named as the team’s co-captain. That same season, Psalmonds was named to the All-Region and All-State teams with a 13-4 record with a 0.80 ERA (which included a 0.00 ERA and nine strikeouts during the AIAW regionals). Psalmonds played for the two winningest teams in SBU softball history (34-11 in 1980 and 36-9 in 1981) under coach JoAnn Harrison. The 1980 team won the regional championship and placed 5th at the AIAW National Championship. The 1981 team placed 4th at regionals and received an at-large invitation to the AIAW National Championship, where they went 1-2.
1984 Men’s Tennis Team
The 1984 Men’s Tennis Team, led by head coach John Bryant, earned a place in SBU history as NAIA national co-champions.
Raul Saad (Argentina), who now lives in Naples, Fla., was named All-American and All-District 16. Sven Groeneveld (Holland), who is a professional coach of 2008 French Open singles champion Ana Ivanovic, was named All-American and All-District 16. Kevin Kopp (Jefferson City, Mo.) is now a banker in Indianapolis, Ind., and was named All-American. He was a member of the national championship doubles team. Gregg Yarbrough (Steele, Mo.) is currently a public school principal. He was named All-American, and was a member of the national championship doubles team. Ronen Graziani (Israel), is a tennis camp owner and real estate agent in Naples, Fla., and was named All-District 16. David Smashey (Bolivar, Mo.) is a science teacher in Willard, Mo. Smashey was named All-District 16.
