September 20, 2008 • Joplin, Mo.
BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The SBU Bearcats are coming off a week in which their men’s team took 2nd place in the UCM Mule Run without Michael Pierce, and saw Shawn Etzenhouser cross the finish line in 1st place individually. The SBU women’s team finished 3rd.
Etzenhouser’s 1st-place finish earned him MIAA Athlete of the Week, announced on Monday afternoon.
On Saturday, SBU will participate in the Missouri Southern State Stampede in Joplin.
“It will be a bigger meet for us, with over 200 runners in both the men’s and women’s race,” said SBU’s head coach, Corey McElhaney. “I think that it will be a good test for us. Hopefully, our upper classmen will step up and have good weekends. We’ve had good workouts this week and our team is ready to go to Joplin and run.”
Etzenhouser is named as MIAA Athlete of the Week
Shawn Etzenhouser, a 5-foot-11 sophomore from Liberty, Mo., won the Central Missouri Mule Run Friday evening (Sept.12).
He won on the 4-mile course with a clocking of 20 minutes, 43.75 seconds -- more than seven seconds ahead of the runner-up, UCM’s Brett Carter.
The Bearcats just missed a team victory, finishing two points behind the host Mules in second place with 80 points.
Etzenhouser is a graduate of Liberty High School.
