BOLIVAR, Mo. -- SBU's Michael Pierce, a two-time All-American this season, has been named to the 2008 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Team as a third team selection.

Pierce was recognized in the May 29, 2008 issue of Diverse: Issues In Higher Education, which established the Sports Scholars Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made notable achievements in academic excellence, athletic performance, and community activism. To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their communities.

Pierce, from Gladstone, Mo., earned All-American recognition this year both in cross country and the indoor mile.
