COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The SBU men and women’s teams travelled to Columbia Missouri for the 9th annual Missouri University Relays. The relays were labeled as the premier track and field festival of the week. Mother nature attempted to put a damper on the meet by having temperatures drop to the low 40’s, with winds up to 20 mph. The Bearcats endured the tough conditions to have a good meet to open the outdoor season.
Coach McElhaney commented: “We had several positive things come out of this weekend, but also had a lot of performances that need to be and will be improved as the season roles along. That is one thing that running a meet every weekend from now till the end of the season helps with. The athletes will get plenty of chances to improve their performances. Overall I was very proud of the entire team. “
Top performances on the women’s side came from sophomore Jenny Blair who improved her school record in the 200 meter dash by running a 25.55 and placing 5th in the University division. Chelsea Strahm also had a strong race for the women’s team by placing 2nd in the 1500 University division, with a 4:58. The trio of Alyssa Maggart, Kelsi Chowning, and Mallory Roth went 1-2-3 in their heat of the women’s 800 meter elite division. Their times of 2:18, 2:19, 2:19 are currently the top three times in the conference.
