ABILENE, Texas -- SBU's leading scorer, Erika Souza, has been named to the second-team of the Daktronics All-Region team for women's basketball.

Souza, a 5-6 senior guard from Sao Paulo, Brazil, has averaged 19.1 points per game (#3 on the MIAA leader board) and 4.77 assists per game (#1 on the MIAA leader board) during the 2007-08 season.

Souza was a unanimous All-MIAA First-Team selection.

Souza was named MIAA Player of the Week on January 14, 2008, for her performance against Central Missouri, in which she set an SBU record with 38 points, and led the Lady Bearcats to a 90-70 victory over the Jennies. Souza scored her record-setting bucket with 1:28 to play, which put her one ahead of Amber Wheeler’s 37-point performance on March 4, 2004 against Emporia State.

“It’s great to see Erika receive this honor,” said SBU’s head coach (and MIAA Coach of the Year), Jim Middleton. “It’s well deserved and it’s great to see credit given where credit is due.”

Souza led her team to a 14-1 record at home, and a 21-9 record overall. Despite being picked 8th in the pre-season MIAA Coaches Poll, SBU finished 3rd in the MIAA standings with a 11-7 conference mark, and was a finalist in the MIAA Tournament Championship game last week in Kansas City.
