KANSAS CITY -- SBU's Michael Pierce has been named as the MIAA Track Athlete of the Week.
Pierce, a 5-foot-10, 135-pound junior from Gladstone, Mo., automatically qualified for the NCAA Division II national meet in the mile with his effort at the Iowa State Classic last Saturday (Feb. 16).
He finished ninth overall in the seeded mile and was the second Division II runner to finish in the event with a time of 4 minutes, 7.80 seconds. He lowered the SBU record in the event, previously set by T. Jay Sanderson (4:08.12) in 2005.
Pierce is a graduate of Kansas City (Mo.)-Oak Park High School.
