KANSAS CITY – The SBU Lady ‘Cats concluded their 2006-07 season by losing to the Washburn Lady Blues 78-53 in the first round of the MIAA tournament.

The Lady ‘Cats kept the score close in the first half, using a well executed, crisp, offense that featured backdoor cuts and short jumpers. SBU went to the locker room only down by 6, trailing 22-28. In fact, SBU led most of the first half, building a lead as big as four points. They defended Washburn’s 3-pointers well, and watched the Lady Blues shoot only 1-12 in the first half for 8.3%. They made several defensive adjustments, particularly against WU’s inside play, that kept them in the game.

But the second half was a much different story.

Washburn came out of the locker room and scored 30 points before the 10:00 mark. Most of their offense came from pounding the ball inside, despite the SBU double-team. WU also began pulling away in the rebound category, ending the game with a 41-25 board advantage.

SBU shot 36.4% from the field and an impressive 47.1% from the three-point line. They were 5-9 from the free-throw line for 55.6%.

In her final game as a Lady ‘Cat, Livia Brito scored 15, and rebounded 6. SBU’s other senior, Amber Wheeler, scored 5, ending a great career for the Lady ‘Cats.
