Art Department: Portfolio Review

A portfolio should consist of no less than 10 to 15 examples of quality work, with 5 to 10 examples being in one area of emphasis (drawing, painting, etc.), and no more than 20 works. Any actual work not "fixed" should have a cover sheet to protect it from being smudged. Work may also be submitted digitally on a DVD or CD. A notebook containing traditional photographs of your work is also acceptable. But remember, if the photographs are not of good quality and the committee concludes we cannot truly judge the quality of the work based on the poor quality of the photographs, an award will not be given. No scholarship application will be considered without the accompanying portfolio. Your portfolio together with the completed Departmental Scholarship Application Form must be in the possession of the SBU Art Department by December 15th for the scholarship application process to begin.

Portfolios may be hand-delivered to the SBU Art Department, sent via an SBU Admissions Representative visiting your area, or mailed directly to the Art Department. Your completed Departmental Scholarship Application Form should always accompany your portfolio.

Reviewed portfolios that are hand-delivered should be picked up after mid-January, by appointment only to insure someone is present to return your portfolio to you. If your Admissions Representative delivered your portfolio, please make arrangements with them to pick up your portfolio and return it to you sometime after January 15th but before February 15th. If you mailed your portfolio, you will need to provide a self addressed, stamped/prepaid envelope (SASE) for its return. If a SASE is not provided we will understand that you do not want your portfolio returned to you. All Reviewed portfolios not retrieved by March 15th will be disposed of.
