Nursing major at Southwest Baptist University

Nursing Major

  • Our program views the practice of nursing as ministry and students are educated in a Christian environment. The program is co-sponsored with Mercy Hospital.
  • The ASN program is a four-semester program that prepares the graduate to become an entry level professional nurse generalist. Graduates are eligible to take the national licensing exam to become registered nurses if they successfully pass this exam.
  • Nursing faculty of the ASN program are Mercy Hospital co-workers. As a result they are up-to-date with the most current practice and technology being used.
  • The faculty are all experienced nurses with many different areas of nursing specialization. Eight are certified by theNational League of Nursing as Nurse Educators.
  • The ratio of faculty to student in the clinical experiences averages one faculty to every 5 to 6 students.
  • The Learning Resource Center provides an opportunity for students to experience simulated learning situations using high-tech mannequins and simulators.
  • A practice-grade electronic health record built for educational purposes is available to give students the foundation needed for documentation in the modern world of health care.
  • Each semester has a clinical component where students gain actual patient care experience predominantly at Mercy Hospital.
  • Students participate in a 135-hour preceptorship assigned one-on-one with a staff nurse at Mercy Hospital. This intense clinical experience provides students the opportunity to participate in the entry level role of a nurse caring for 3 to 4 patients under the joint guidance of the preceptor and the nursing faculty.
