Mel Steele, 2007 Orien B. Hendrex Distinguished TeacherMel L. Steele was the 2007 recipient of the Orien B. Hendrex Distinguished Teacher Award. The award is presented annually to a faculty to a faculty member who has been judged by the previous three years' and current year's graduating classes to be outstanding in teaching ability and personal guidance. The Board of Trustees at Southwest Baptist University has designated this award in memory of former academic dean, Orien B. Hendrex.

Mel L. Steele became an assistant professor of business administration at Southwest Baptist University in 1990. Since that time he has taught predominantly on the Mountain View campus. In recent years, Mel has been active in designing and teaching interactive television courses for the University. Prior to coming to SBU, Mel taught at Missouri Valley College in Kansas City.

Mel received his bachelor's of science degree at SBU in 1984. In 1986 he earned a master's degree in business administration from Louisiana Tech Univeristy in Ruston, Louisiana.
