Department Chair Dwight Haun said “Our graduates are dependable, feel a call to teach and persist in following that call.”
Secondary (Content) Education Major
Do you have a passion for teaching? Our faculty does.
- Field experiences allow SBU students to view education from “the other side of the desk” with the first field experience usually completed during the sophomore year. A more extensive field experience, including the planning and teaching of several lessons, is completed in the junior year.
- SBU Students complete a full semester of student teaching during the fall or spring semester of the teacher candidate’s senior year. This serves as the capstone experience for the teacher candidates.
- Many of the content faculty members are highly involved in professional organizations associated with their area of expertise, serving in positions of leadership and regularly presenting at conferences. This allows faculty to provide teacher candidates the opportunity to attend professional conferences and to network with professionals in the field while completing their degree program.
- Some federal student loan programs offer loan forgiveness to graduates who teach in an area of shortage or in a qualified school district.
