Southwest Baptist University

1995 Parkway Distinguished Teacher

Darrell Strait

The Parkway Distinguished Professor program is sponsored by the Parkway Baptist Church in Saint Louis.  Southwest Baptist University was invited to select an outstanding faculty member to be considered for this honor.  The faculty nominee is one who has made a substantial contribution to Christian education and who has proven to be an outstanding teacher.  In 1995, Dr. Darrell Strait was selected as the Parkway Distinguished Professor.

"Dr. Strait is one of the most outstanding faculty at SBU," said Dr. Michael Awad, provost. "He is admired and respected by both faculty and students. Faculty like Dr. Strait are what SBU attempts to recruit."

Strait joined the SBU faculty in 1981 as a professor of chemistry. In addition to his teaching, he served as dean of the college of science and mathematics for more than 11 years until his return to full-time teaching in the fall 1995. Strait received the Parkway Distinguished Teaching Award in 1995 for outstanding contributions to Christian education. He also has been honored twice with the Life Beautiful Award at SBU. The faculty members of SBU annually select a peer whose life represents excellence in teaching and advising with a strong, caring Christian commitment.

Strait received his bachelor's degree from Iowa Wesleyan College and received a master's degree and doctor of philosophy degree in chemistry from the University of Missouri-Rolla. Before joining the SBU faculty, Strait taught chemistry at Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa.
