Mike Pitts has served as Director of Athletics since May 2010 after serving as the Interim Co-Director of Athletics in 2009-10. Pitts has also worked for SBU as Assistant AD for Operations and as the Media Relations Director. Pitts serves on many committees in the MIAA, including the MIAA Institutional Representative Council, the MIAA Championships and Officiating Committee, the MIAA Awards Committee, the MIAA Basketball Tournament Committee, and the MIAA Conference Realignment Committee.
Pitts’ vision for the department of athletics is one focused on the student-athletes. When he was named Director of Athletics, Pitts shared that he envisioned a culture where SBU’s student-athletes could have the best possible environment to grow spiritually, academically, athletically, relationally, and as leaders.
Under Pitts’ leadership, the department of athletics has grown in areas of personnel, facilities, corporate sponsorships, and finance. Pitts has built key relationships on and off campus – and has brought a culture of organizational clarity to the department.
Pitts is a 1985 graduate of SBU with a degree in economics. He also completed his M.B.A. from SBU, graduating from the program in the summer of 2010. After graduating in 1985, Pitts moved to Kansas City where he worked as a trading floor manager at the Kansas City Board of Trade for nearly nine years. In 1994, Pitts moved to Princeton, N.J., where he was the founding pastor of Princeton Bible Church. After 12 years in New Jersey, Pitts and his family moved back to Bolivar, where Pitts became the Sports Information Director for the Bearcats.
Mike and his wife, Rhonda, have two sons, Jack and Brock, who are avid sports fans. For hobbies, Pitts enjoys reading, watching classic movies, computer games, and cooking for family and friends. He has also completed two marathons (Disney and Baltimore) and one half marathon (Baltimore).
