Student Meal Plans

Meal Plan Agreements

Students who reside in the University’s residence hall facilities are required to carry either a 20-meal plan or a 15-meal plan. Students residing in SBU’s on-campus apartments and houses can choose to carry any University meal plan and/or DCB account. SBU off-campus and commuter students can also choose to carry any of the University’s meal plan and/or declining cash balance (DCB) account. Students, faculty, and staff members who are over their meal plan limit may pay cash or use their Bearcat Bucks when purchasing a meal at Mellers Dining Commons (all meals) or the SBU Sports Café (breakfast only).

Making Changes to Your Meal Plan

Students, faculty, and staff members who wish to change their meal plan may contact the Office of Residence Life, which is located inside the Student Life Center at the Goodson Student Union. The Student Life Center is open daily, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For additional information, stop by or call the Student Life Center at (417) 328-1885.

  • To change from a bigger meal plan to a smaller meal plan during the annual Fall and Spring Semesters, a change request must be filed before 5 p.m. on the fifth day of classes. 
  • To change from a smaller meal plan to a larger meal plan, change request may be filed at any time.  
  • Students, faculty, and staff who carry a 20-meal plan, a 15-meal plan, or a Super Bearcat Bucks meal plan can use their weekly meal credits to get breakfast meals at either the Mellers Dining Commons or the SBU Sports Café during the posted breakfast hours at each facility. Meal credits can also be used to get lunch and dinner meals at Mellers Dining Commons during posted lunch and dinner hours.
  • During Fall and Spring Semesters, meal plan cancellations must be filed before 5 p.m. on the fifth day of classes. 
  • During January Semester – and the June and July Summer Semesters, meal plan cancellations must be filed before 5 p.m. on the third day of classes. 
  • Cancellation requests received after the aforementioned times – for each of the specified semesters – will not be accepted. 
  • Cancellation refunds, per the University’s room-and-board refund policy, will be based on the following schedule:

    - Prior to the start of classes, a 100-percent refund will be issued.
    - Before the fifth day of classes (for the annual Fall and Spring Semesters), a 90-percent refund will be issued.
    - Before the third day of classes (for the annual January Semester and the June and July Summer Semesters), a 90-percent refund will be issued.
    - For cancellation requests made after 5 p.m. on the fifth day of classes, no refund will be given.

  • All meal plan cancellation requests must be made through the Student Life Center.

Meal Plan Options

20-Meal Plan

  • Includes 20 of the 20 meals served per week and $50 in FREE bonus bucks that can be used in both the University’s Sports Café and Kaldi’s Coffee Shop.
  • Expires at the end of the semester for which it is purchased.
  • Offered during the Fall, Spring, and January semesters ($50 bonus bucks benefit not available with the January Semester meal plan). 
  • Overall Cost:  $1,750 (the $50 bonus bucks benefit comes FREE with the plan and is not included in the overall cost).  Price valid for the 2013-2014 academic year.
  • Payment options:  Credit card, cash, or check.  Can be charged to student accounts.  Payment must be made directly to Southwest Baptist University.
  • Available to all students and to SBU faculty and staff members.

15-Meal Plan

  • Includes 15 of the 20 meals served per week (approximately 80 meals less than the 20-meal plan and does not include the free $50 bonus bucks option). 
  • Expires at the end of the semester for which it is purchased.
  • Offered during the Fall and Spring semesters.  The 15-meal plan is also offered during the summer (June and July) semesters.  Summer semester 15-meal plans include breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals served Monday through Friday (weekend meal service not available for the summer semesters).
  • Overall Cost:  $1,700 ($50 less than the 20-meal plan).  Price valid for the 2013-2014 academic year.
  • Payment options:  Credit card, cash, or check.  Can be charged student accounts.  Payment must be made directly to Southwest Baptist University.
  • Available to all students and to SBU faculty and staff members.

Super Bearcat Bucks Meal Plan

  • Includes 65 meals that can be used throughout the semester of purchase (usage limit: 20 meals per week) and $50 in free bonus bucks that can be used to purchase food and beverage items in both the University’s Sports Café and Kaldi's Coffee Shop.  The bonus bucks can also be used to purchase additional meals at Mellers Dining Commons (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and the SBU Sports Café (breakfast only).
  • Expires at the end of the semester for which it is purchased.
  • Offered only during the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Overall Cost:  $485 (the $50 bonus bucks benefit comes FREE with the plan and is not included in the overall cost). Price valid for the 2013-2014 academic year.
  • Payment options:  Credit card, cash, or check.  Can be charged to student accounts.  Payment must be made directly to Southwest Baptist University.
  • Available to campus apartment/house, off-campus, and commuter students only.  SBU faculty and staff members may also purchase this plan.

Declining Cash Balance (DCB) Accounts

SBU students, faculty, and staff members wishing to purchase a declining cash balance (DCB) account may do so by contacting the Fresh Ideas Food Service Management Office, which is located inside the Mellers Dining Commons.  Orders may be made in person or can be placed by phone at (417) 328-1542. 

  • Offered during the Fall, Spring, January, and summer (June and July) semesters.
  • Available to all students and to SBU faculty and staff members.
  • Residence hall students – who are required to maintain a 20 or 15-meal plan – can purchase a DCB, if they wish, but cannot use a DCB as a substitute for their meal plan. 
  • Minimum purchase amount is $20. 
  • Payment options:  Credit card, cash, or check.  Cannot be charged to student accounts.  Payment must be made directly to Fresh Ideas Food Service Management.  All DCB purchases are non-refundable.
  • Expiration Date: One year after date of purchase.

Meal Plan Ordering Information

SBU students, faculty, and staff members wishing to purchase, change, or cancel a meal plan may do so by completing a Southwest Baptist University Meal Plan Application.  The application can be obtained from the SBU Student Life Center or it can be downloaded from the MySBU Portal. For more information about meal plan orders, please contact the Housing Office at (417) 328-1825 or e-mail ckeller@sbuniv.edu.

Declining Cash Balance (DCB) Account Order Information

SBU students, faculty, and staff members wishing to purchase a declining cash balance (DCB) account may do so by contacting the Fresh Ideas Food Service Management Office, which is located inside the Mellers Dining Commons.  Orders may be made in person or can be placed by phone at (417) 328-1542.

Prices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals can be found on the Dining Facility Service Schedule. Prices for individual `a la carte items at the SBU Sports Café and Kaldi’s Coffee Shop can be obtained by calling the Sports Café at (417) 328-1966 or the Coffee Shop at (417) 328-1544.
