BOLIVAR, MO – Southwest Baptist University’s Music Department will present the annual Masterworks Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 2, in Pike Auditorium on SBU’s main campus in Bolivar.  The concert is free and open to the public.

The annual concert is entering its fourth decade of bringing large-scale choral and orchestral works to southwest Missouri.  The program will be “Magnificat in D” by Johann Sebastian Bach for soloists, choir, and orchestra and “Jubilate Deo,” from the Tres Cantus Laudente by Mack Wilberg for choir, organ, and brass ensemble.

Under the direction of Dr. James Tarrant, associate professor of music, the “Magnificat” will feature soloists Dr. Kathy Brown, professor of music; Mrs. Laura Compton, instructor of voice; Dr. Andrew Campbell, assistant professor of voice, and Mr. Joseph Wooderson, music minister of First Baptist church of Bolivar, all of Bolivar.  The massed choir consists of the Chorale and Concert Choir of SBU and the Bolivar Community Chorus.  The orchestra will be the combined effort of the Chamber Orchestra of SBU and area professional musicians.

“This event is the artistic culmination of a year of musical offerings to our community,” said Dr. Tarrant.  “The presentation will be grand in both the number of musicians on stage and the caliber of the works to be performed.  We are immensely pleased to present the Bach as it represents a true monument in the repertoire of the high Baroque.”
