Why do you enjoy teaching at SBU?  "The 'family' of music students, faculty and staff within our department strikes that coveted balance between being large enough to produce a great variety of musical experiences for our students, yet small enough that everyone knows and supports one another."

Educational Background: Dr. Waters earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Jacksonville State University in Alabama; the Master of Music degree and in Woodwind Performance, and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Saxophone Performance from the University of Georgia.

Professional Activities:  Dr. Waters presents solo saxophone recitals and professional performances on woodwind instruments in a variety of venues in the region. He served for a number of years as the state secretary/treasurer of the Missouri Association of Departments and Schools of Music, and was elected president of the organization for 2010-2012.  He has served previously as the national second vice-president of the North Amercian Saxophone Alliance, and has been a featured soloist at the organization’s national conferences.  He was a founding member of Verismo! saxophone quartet, and as a freelance musician he has performed in numerous professional ensembles, including the Charleston (SC) Symphony Orchestra, the Macon (GA) Symphony Orchestra and the Springfield (MO) Symphony Orchestra; and has performed in orchestras for shows which have featured Marvin Hamlisch, Rosemary Clooney and Wayne Newton.

Faith Dedications:  Dr. Waters is a member of First Baptist Church in Bolivar, Missouri. He leads and plays oboe in the church orchestra, serves as pianist for worship services, and for nineteen years was the accompanist for the middle school choir.
