Dorm Net - Steps 3 and 4
- If the hardware is already installed, the computer should automatically configure and connect to the network.
- If the computer is having problems connecting to the network, please check your TCP/IP settings
- Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Network Connections.
- Double click on the LAN Local Area Connection that should be listed.
- Click on the properties button
- In the window scroll down and highlight Internet Protocol TCP/IP and click the properties button.
- Ensure the button that says”Obtain an IP Address Automatically” and “Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically” are selected. Click OK
- Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Networks
- Under Configurations you will see your network card has been added
- Under Configurations you will have to ADD:
- The TCP/IP protocol; and a client (Microsoft client is on your windows setup disk.)
- A winsock will have to be installed and set up to handle TCP/IP.
- A network client will have to be loaded, no pre-existing software is available, but the Internet has shareware software for your use.
- Due to the many software applications available please follow the instructions provided by the software manufacturer.

- Click on the Apple symbol | System Preferences | Network
- When the next window appears, it should list the types of connections available. Ethernet should be listed
- The top “Location” drop down menu should have Automatic listed. If it doesn’t, do so now.
- The second “Show” drop down menu should have Built-in Ethernet selected. This will display the Ethernet connection properties.
- Select TCP/IP button.
- The “Configure IPv4” drop down menu should have Using DHCP selected.
- Go to the control panel and set up TCP / IP.
- Verify that Apple Talk is on, if not turn it on.
- The same as the new Mac operating system, except the software will have to be downloaded from the Internet that will run TCP/IP and that sets up your computer to let it connect to the Internet through a network connection.
- Verify that Apple Talk is on, if not turn it on.
- Due to the many software applications available please follow the instructions provided by the software manufacturer.
Step 3 - Setting up the network properties
Windows 2000/XP:
The newer operating systems will automatically detect and install any new hardware. Have the hardware manufacturer's driver CD available for installation.
Windows 9x:

Mac 10.X and newer OS:

Step 4 - Getting Software
University Library Media Services has several CD's that have many of the Windows95/98 Internet/e-mail software applications needed to access the Internet from your dorm room. These CD's do not have any files or software that will help you in the installation of network card, drivers, clients, or windows files. This software is provided to help speed your connection to the Internet without waiting on downloaded files.
