Genna and Rodmy

Africa

August 18, 2007 - Things I will miss about living in the village (in no particular order):
1. Children yelling out to me, "Good morning! How are you? I'm fine!" at any time of the day with no chance for me to respond, because it is all of the English they know.

August 7, 2007 - Hello everyone, Well, its day 4 of the nationwide petrol (gas) strike! Yes, people here in South Africa like to strike often to get better salaries and benefits.

July 24, 2007 - I hope things are well with you and your families. I have been interviewing many people in the community for my paper on the culture and one of the things I learned was about what widows are expected to do when their husband dies.

July 18, 2007 - I am emailing specifically to request that you yarp for a woman, Ingrid, that I am visiting in the hospital who has AIDS and might not make it much longer. One of the Home Based Care Workers, Sasa, just found her last week.

June 28, 2007 - How are you all? I hope things are well. Sorry I have not written an update in so long, I have been out of town at Kruger National Park and I have also been sick a little over a week.

June 6, 2007 - How are you? Things are a little slow here because of a national public workers strike. The schools and many crèches are closed.

June 1, 2007 - How are you? We are doing well, our health is good and the weather has warmed up a little.

May 23, 2007 - How are you? As you can see from the subject title, it is cold here. It seems worse than when it's cold in the states because the houses here do not have heat or insulation. So even if it gets a little warmer outside it stays cold inside.

May 3, 2007 - We just enjoyed a five day weekend (yes, the holidays here seem a bit excessive). We went to Pretoria and stayed with our supervisor for a few days because I needed to see my doctor and get an allergy shot.

April 23, 2007 - I hope you and your families are well. Sorry we haven’t written in such a while! I was sick and then we haven’t been able to find internet that works around here. So I will try to catch you up on the last 2+ weeks.

April 3, 2007 - We are spending the week in Pretoria right now because I have bronchitis and recovering in the village is not very comfortable or quick. I was feeling better for about a week then started feeling pretty bad.

March 22, 2007 - I wanted to let you know that I am feeling better and today I am working with a m team that is in from the US. My medicine is working and though I'm tired,

March 9, 2007 - I hope all is well. Today we are in the city of Pretoria because I had to come to the doctor to get an allergy shot, so I am able to email.

March 2, 2007 - I hope all is well.  I just wanted to send a quick email to let you know that we have worked out a new supervisor. I’m sorry if I caused anyone undue worry!

February 27, 2007 - We are really starting to settle in here and we are learning a new language. In this area, seTswana (the language we are learning) is mixed with sePedi and seSotho, so we are learning from each language.

February 22, 2007 - We made it safely. We are living with a young couple for the first month, and the woman will be our language teacher.
