Karena & Stephanie

Hey! My dad is officially out of ICU!!!! I talked to him today and yesterday and he's eating real meals (well hospital meals :) and I'm so thankful! It's been a month now that he's been in the hospital. They are exercising his legs and things to get him strong enough to walk.

Tonight we are having a party for all of our local girl friends here. We are cooking Chole Chavwal (chick peas and rice with veggies). It'll be yummy! And we will play games and stuff:; they really like Pictionary and Olga has a geography game that we might play. It should be a lot of fun tonight, but a lot of work for us today! Please continue to pr. for opportunities to share with the girls!

Last Saturday I realized that it is important to keep the door locked at all times in India, even when you are home. We go down the street a ways to get drinking water. Sometimes the boy who carries the large bottles will follow us home, and sometimes he is busy and has to come later. It’s when he waits that there’s a problem. Most times he just walks right in without ringing the bell or even knocking. Once, the three of us girls were in the kitchen cooking, when all of a sudden, there was a boy in our kitchen! This wouldn’t have been a problem except that Olga, the Colombian lady that we live with, was still in her pjs, meaning shorts and a t-shirt, which you might think is fine, but is completely inappropriate in this culture. So Olga squealed and hid behind me until he set down the water jug and walked out to get the second one. Then she made a mad dash for her room. It was pretty hilarious. Anyway, tonight, Steph had gone to get the water, and they told her that they were too busy and would bring it tomorrow. So we made ourselves a homemade face mask with some oatmeal, honey, and lemon, and we had just put it on our faces, with big chunks of oatmeal hanging off, when Steph said, “I’m glad the paani guy (paani=water) is coming tomorrow. He might think we really ARE aliens if he saw us.” And just then the doorbell rang, and without even waiting for an answer, in walks the paani guy carrying the jug of water! Well, at least he rang the doorbell this time! So steph yelled from the room for him to put it in the kitchen and we hid in the room until he left. Then we ran and locked the door. Like I said, it’s better just to keep the door locked when you’re a girl living in India.

The internet was out for almost a week last week. We’ve complained to the phone company several times each day, but still no luck. Still, no one has come to look at it, although they have called back a few times to ask us if it’s working. And finally the guy came to check on it, a few minutes after it started working again! This is a funny country I live in.

Steph and I have been doing A LOT of teaching English lately. It’s been good though. In two weeks, our supervisor is closing the school that we teach at in the evenings. Their family will be making some big changes soon due to the fact that there won’t be any teachers left to help out at the school after Steph and I leave. They still are keeping their contract with the nurse placement company where we teach pronunciation in the mornings. At the end of October, Steph and I will go down to Cochin to teach at the other nurse office. We are SO excited about that! Cochin is right by the beach! And it’ll be the best time of year! And since we’re teaching, we get free plane tickets there and back, and a free place to live. We are also planning a trip to Rajasthan at the beginning of October. We might even get to go on a Camel Safari! Anyway, that’ll be a month of fun and school work as we will have many papers due when we return from our trips.

Things have been good here. I hope you had a happy Labor day!

More stuff you can pr for:
- continued language learning
- continued opportunities for deeper friendships with the girls we know
- good time management to get schoolwork done
- courage
- the changes that our supervisors are making

Thanks for all your prs!
