Online Independent Study
You have reached the web site and online 2014-2015 catalog of Online Independent Study (OLIS) at SBU. SBU is a Christ-centered, caring academic community, preparing students to be servant leaders in a global society.
Special Notice: In order to best facilitate the LMS transition from ANGEL to Blackboard Learn there will be a couple temporary adjustments to the Online Independent Study (OLIS) program.
First, enrollments processed after 10/30/14 will no longer have the option of a two month extension; courses will have to be completed in the standard four month time frame. The two month extension option will go back into effect 6/1/15.
Second, OLIS new course enrollment will be closed starting 1/29/15. New enrollments will be accepted again on 5/1/15, for the summer term beginning 6/1/15. Students who were planning on taking an OLIS course between 2/1/15 – 5/31/2015, please contact Cassandra Jennings (firstname.lastname@example.org) at 328-1599 to understand enrollment options.
OLIS courses are designed for you - the individual who wants to study out-of-class, at your own pace. There are a variety of web-based (ANGEL LMS) self-paced courses. You may be required to use a library or to conduct other kinds of research.
Although self-motivation and individual responsibility are key aspects of online independent study, you will receive guidance and instruction from an instructor. In most cases you will be asked to complete and submit your assignments directly to your instructor. You should submit comments and specific questions with each assignment, as this is the best way to create a dialogue that parallels classroom interaction. Thus, the medium is different, but the results are the same: mastery of the course content. In addition, an online independent study course should help you become better organized and more self-reliant.
