Our Mission
The Department of Computer and Information Sciences carries out its mission by:
- enabling students to apply the theoretical framework in the computer and information sciences to the analysis, design, and implementation of problem solutions and systems
- enabling students to employ the use of computing technology from a Christian perspective as technological servant leaders within their chosen careers.

The Department of Computer and Information Sciences is a dynamic, nationally-recognized and growing department of computer and information science faculty and students. Home to five faculty, two faculty associates and approximately 80 students, and with over twenty top-ten national awards in the last four years, the CIS Department has established itself as a national leader among CIS departments at evangelical Christian universities in the U.S. The SBU Computer and Information Sciences faculty and students seek to honor God through the pursuit of academic excellence and leadership in the computing sciences at the national and international level.
Distinctives
- In 2011, the SBU CIS Department’s curriculum in parallel and distributed processing became one of only 22 in the U.S. and only 33 in the world recognized by the NSF/IEEE’s Technical Committee on Parallel Processing.
- In the fall of 2011, the four full-time CIS Department faculty members are together celebrating the beginning their 59th year of teaching experience. With faculty associates, the CIS Department is home to more than 80 years of teaching experience.
- CIS Department graduates enjoy a 98% placement rate for the graduating classes 2000-2011

- According to Money Magazine, software engineering is the "Best Job in America" boasting an average salary of $80.000. Starting salaries SBU CIS graduates currently fall into the $50,000-$60,000 range.
