Current Research:  Studying solutions to the challenges that teachers face has been Cavner's on-going research in a multi-country study of teacher vitality. Over the past few years, Cavner has discussed and shared in staff development retreats in several countries on this topic as well as teaching classroom applications of strategies consistent with how God has designed our minds to learn.

Educational and Professional Background:  Dr. Cavner earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education from Oral Roberts University in 1972 and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Boise State University 2004. She also earned a Masters of Education (2001) and Doctor of Education (2003) in Curriculum and Instruction from Boise State University with an emphasis in educational leadership for school renewal. She holds a Missouri lifetime certification in elementary education and physical education and has an endorsement to teach early childhood education.

Why do you enjoy teaching at SBU?  "I enjoy being involved in teacher preparation at SBU especially because SBU's educational purposes match my own. It is a joy to work with faculty who believe it is essential to help students develop Christian leadership skills along with a Biblical understanding of relevant educational issues. Before coming to SBU, the guiding scripture that I adopted as a teacher was Peter's exhortation to diligently 'add to faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity' (II Peter 1:5-7). To my surprise, the education department had just adopted this verse as their guiding verse."

Faith dedications:  Dr. Cavner is an active member at First Baptist Church in Bolivar and enjoys singing in the choir. She also leads a Bible Study, writes children and teen discipleship materials for a Christian publisher, attends a Chinese home fellowship, and teaches for mission outreaches in Asia and Africa.

Interests and Hobbies:  Mission Trips, Grandchildren, camping and travel, exercise, and reading.
